Providing fun creative learning activities in an iconic VW bus...

They bring a smile to everybody’s face the moment they see one go by. Children point, shout and wave…“look at that cool van”, folks even get their cameras out and snap away. The question Sy, founder and managing director of Creative Camper Club and Vintage VW Tours wants to ask the uninitiated is why?

Ever experienced that feeling of loveliness you get when you warm to something instantaneously? Well, now's your chance to feel what we do each time we get into one of our old school classic Volkswagen (VW) camper vans/microbuses. Engage in the ultimate cool! Air-Cooled experience... come on board and find out why we can't help but smile too!

Creative Camper Club and Vintage VW Tours are projects that have become all consuming for teacher, “Dapper” Sy “The Guv’nor” (a cheeky term of endearment coined by his teaching and boardroom colleagues whilst in post as a teacher governor). He has combined what he loves most… Education and vintage air-cooled VW’s and is endeavouring to encourage creativity and  share his love for these iconic vehicles, whilst giving something back.

Mission: To provide fun, memorable, creative educational enrichment & learning activities in historic, classic VW campers and kombi microbuses.

The aim of eventually offering these free to educational and children’s charities as part of our core value of contributing to the community and doing something good.

Vision: To be recognised as one of the best, unique, alternative educational enrichment experience providers in London.

We aim to provide opportunities for many more people to experience these iconic ultimate multi-purpose utility vehicles as they were truly intended and keep them on the road in order to one day pass on the baton and hand them to their future “custodians”… today’s children.

Teaching experience: Sy has been a school teacher for over seventeen years and in that time has always been passionate about enrichment and extra-curricular activities that promote fun, learning and creativity.  As a beginning teacher at Tiffin Boys’ school in Kingston (top 100 UK) he set up his first successful and popular after-school enrichment club and in other schools he ran a variety of clubs and enrichment activities such as animation, graphic design, game making and robotics the latter of which he had much success with his last team in an international competition taking them on to the World Robotics Olympiad 2013 in Kuala Lumpur. Sy’s teaching career started later than most in the autumn of 1999 at the dawn of the new millennium, after fourteen years in the fashion industry he began initial teacher training at the Institute of Education, University College London and was part of the first ever cohort of the first Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) in Information and Communication Technology (ICT). After working in a number of schools mainly in London and developing fun & creative ways to teach ICT, transforming the departments he led, significantly raising attainment across all cohorts, he embarked upon a new adventure that would take him to the desert.

Sy took up the post of Head of ICT & E-Learning at Doha College, a top British Embassy school (one of only six in the world) in Qatar and again transformed the department and the use of ICT & E-Learning over the whole school during the seven years he led, introducing programming/coding, robotics and computer science during his tenure. In his last year all students taking ICT achieved 100% A*-C grades in their IGCSE finals. Sy has had the opportunity to teach across many age ranges from Primary to Sixth Form as well as Adult learners. In addition he has an astute appreciation of many different cultures and nationalities, in his last post the student population consisted of over fifty four different nationalities. He has been involved in teaching & learning in a variety of contexts from  summer workshops to underprivileged gifted and talented children held at Greenwich University, initial teacher training in a top 100 grammar school, teaching in tough London comprehensives, and a top British international school to private tuition for members of the Qatari Royal family. All his expertise and experience has gone into designing the enrichment activities Creative Camper Club provides. Sy currently teaches part-time at the outstanding, La Retraite Roman Catholic Girls' School in Clapham, London. In addition, and as a volunteer, he also delivers Computational Thinking workshops to Primary school teachers to assist them in understanding how best to deliver the new compulsory "Computing" curriculum to their pupils.

Environment: We are committed to the environment and intend to operate on a net carbon neutral footprint. By working with specialist companies to offset what our buses/campers may produce by the planting the appropriate number of trees amongst other measures and best practise. Our philosophy is simple… Restore, Reuse, and Recycle and is really the core of what Creative Camper Club (CCC) do and how we use our vehicles. We have also tried to keep all our VW’s as true to original as we can, restoring as close to factory specifications as possible. At CCC we have a commitment to limit the use of unnecessary packaging and make packaging as simple and minimal as possible, most of the packaging of merchandise being reusable and/or repurpose able.  All packaging is made from recyclable materials.
